According to the Albuquerque Police Department, the incident unfolded shortly before 3 p.m. in the area of Menaul and Tramway Boulevards. Officers say 44-year-old Martin Hernandez opened fire on them, prompting officers to return fire.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the exchange.
An investigation into the shooting is underway, and APD says more details will be released as the case develops.
