After the Floods, Community Comes Together for Clean-Up

VADO, N.M. – Community support was on full display this weekend as dozens of volunteers came together to help Vado residents begin recovering from recent flood damage.

Roughly 50 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to assist homeowners with cleanup efforts, which included removing debris, clearing out mud from homes, and constructing makeshift driveways to restore access. Some areas had seen floodwaters rise as high as four feet, leaving significant damage in their wake.

Vado Elementary School served as the coordination hub for the volunteer teams, acting as a central location for organizing supplies and assigning tasks throughout the day.

The relief effort was a collaborative initiative between the Gadsden Independent School District and the Doña Ana County Office of Emergency Management. School district officials expressed pride in supporting the community during a time of need.

Local residents, many still reeling from the aftermath of the flooding, expressed deep appreciation for the volunteer turnout.

“I think it’s incredible to see people show up like this—giving their time and energy to help others,” said Doretha Owens, a longtime Vado resident. “It really means a lot.”

Clean-up and recovery efforts are expected to continue in the days ahead as the community works to restore normalcy after the damaging floods.
