Trump Signs Off on Disaster Aid for New Mexico Community Battling Flood Damage

N.M. — In the wake of relentless flash floods that have ravaged the village of Ruidoso, President Donald Trump has authorized a federal disaster declaration for New Mexico, opening the door for critical aid to residents still reeling from recent tragedies.

The declaration, signed following last week’s severe weather, will provide access to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance. Lincoln County residents can now apply for financial support to cover home repairs, temporary housing, and medical needs resulting from flood-related injuries or health complications.

The most recent storm system struck last Wednesday, triggering flash floods and mudslides in an area still struggling to recover from an earlier flood just three weeks ago that claimed three lives and caused widespread destruction to hundreds of homes. Emergency crews were called in Thursday to rescue at least five people who were stranded by rising water.

This summer has brought a string of punishing afternoon storms to southern New Mexico, overwhelming the region’s ability to cope. The situation is worsened by the aftermath of recent wildfires, which stripped the mountain slopes around Ruidoso of vegetation, leaving the land unable to absorb heavy rainfall and increasing the risk of floods.

Local officials hope the federal support will accelerate recovery efforts in the flood-battered community, where cleanup, rebuilding, and safety concerns remain urgent priorities.
