3,000 Free Backpacks Up for Grabs in Albuquerque School Supply Drive

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As the new school year approaches, thousands of Albuquerque students will head to class with the supplies they need, thanks to a large-scale community effort.

More than 3,000 backpacks are being distributed this weekend through the annual “Cruisin Into The School Year” supply drive, a collaboration between Albuquerque Youth & Family Services and Presbyterian Turquoise Care.

Two major distribution sites — West Mesa Community Center and Cesar Chavez Community Center — are each stocked with over 1,500 backpacks ready for pick-up.

“This is about giving students the best possible start,” said Dominic Saavedra, supervisor at West Mesa Community Center. “Having the right supplies on day one can make a big difference in a student’s confidence and ability to succeed.”

The initiative serves students of all ages, from preschoolers to high school seniors, allowing them to choose the supplies they need most.

Saavedra noted the growing importance of the event amid rising costs for many families. “Even with other free events around the city, the need continues to grow,” he said. “That’s why we focused on locations that serve some of the city’s most underserved communities — one on the west side and one on the east.”

Now in its eighth year, the backpack giveaway has expanded its reach, and organizers say they anticipate enough participation this year to distribute all of the available supplies.

Families interested in participating must pre-register ahead of the weekend’s event. Details and registration information are available through the City of Albuquerque’s official website.
