ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Veterans from across the region gathered on Saturday to pay tribute to the 84 sailors who perished aboard the USS Bullhead, one of the final American naval vessels lost during World War II.
The ceremony marked the 80th anniversary of the submarine’s sinking on August 6, 1945, when it was struck by a Japanese aircraft. The tragedy occurred on the same day the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Members of the Bullhead Bay Submarine Veterans organization led the remembrance event. Base Commander Daniel Rose emphasized the importance of honoring the fallen: “No one is truly gone until they’re forgotten, and we’re committed to keeping their memory alive.”
The solemn gathering served as a reminder of the sacrifice made by the crew and the enduring legacy of those who served during the war.
