NM Museum of Natural History Hosts Farewell Event Before 7-Month Closure

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — This Sunday, the public will have one last chance to explore the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science before it temporarily closes its doors for a long-anticipated renovation project.

“It’s a final opportunity to revisit what people love about the museum before we begin our seven-month closure,” said Sarah Bush, CEO of the museum and its foundation.

Founded in 1988, the museum has become a cornerstone of Albuquerque’s educational and cultural landscape, offering exhibits that trace New Mexico’s story from the origins of the universe to modern day. One recent highlight is the “Ancient Life” gallery, which features over 300 fossils from across the state.

Bush hopes visitors will take this chance to experience popular attractions one more time before the transformation begins. The $4 million renovation—the museum’s first major update in decades—will revamp the main entrance, gift shop, and ticketing area, while also tackling critical infrastructure needs.

Deputy Director Shannon Bay explained that some of the repairs are essential. “We’re replacing aging skylights and the original sewer line, which has reached the end of its usable life. While we’re at it, we’re making the lobby more welcoming for visitors.”

To keep the educational spirit alive during the closure, the museum is hitting the road. A custom-designed RV exhibit, focused on New Mexico’s geologic timeline, will begin touring local schools, museums, and public events. Its first appearance is scheduled for the New Mexico State Fair this September.

Museum staff also want the public to know this is not a goodbye. No exhibits are being removed—in fact, new ones are being added, including hands-on displays about mammals and the sun.

Renovations are expected to wrap up in early 2026, with a refreshed visitor experience ready to welcome guests back through its doors.
