Lifeguards Honored for Heroic Rescue at South Valley Aquatic Center

Albuquerque — A group of quick-thinking lifeguards has been honored by the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners for their heroic actions that saved a young swimmer’s life at the South Valley Aquatic Center.

The incident occurred on June 23, when lifeguards discovered a child unconscious in the pool. Logan Sanchez swiftly pulled the child from the water, while pool manager Melanie Hernandez immediately coordinated the emergency response. Lifeguards Edgar Pavia Garcia, Anthony Montoya, Joshua Lovato, and Japhet Beltran Larios worked together to perform three rounds of CPR and additional lifesaving interventions.

Thanks to their teamwork and training, the child regained consciousness before emergency responders arrived.

“You’ve shown an incredible level of maturity and professionalism for your age,” said County Commissioner Frank Baca during the recognition ceremony. “Your actions serve as a powerful example to your peers, and your dedication has not gone unnoticed.”

Several of the lifeguards are reportedly planning careers in the healthcare field, inspired by their experience and commitment to helping others.
