ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 40-year-old Albuquerque mother, Isha Garcia, appeared before a judge Thursday after being charged with child abuse in connection with a fentanyl overdose involving her one-year-old child.
The incident occurred at a Days Inn located on Candelaria Road, where police reported that both Garcia and her child had overdosed. According to a criminal complaint, a hotel housekeeper found the baby unresponsive and administered Narcan, successfully reviving the infant. Authorities said the child had been in a playpen with a twin sibling while adults in the room were using fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Garcia allegedly admitted that her child discovered a pill on the floor, which she later realized was fentanyl. The New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department confirmed that both children have since been placed in a safe environment.
State prosecutors are requesting that Garcia remain in custody until her trial, citing concerns for public safety. A detention hearing is expected to take place within the next week.
