The Dragon Bravo Fire burning near the Grand Canyon has now scorched more than 130,000 acres as of this morning, according to updates from the Watch Duty App.
Classified as a “megafire” — a designation for wildfires exceeding 100,000 acres — Dragon Bravo is among the ten largest wildfires in Arizona’s recorded history. The fire’s intense heat is fueling rare atmospheric conditions, creating pyrocumulus and pyrocumulonimbus clouds that generate their own erratic weather patterns.
Two elite hotshot crews from Lincoln National Forest have been dispatched to assist in firefighting efforts. While much of Grand Canyon National Park remains accessible to visitors, the fire has destroyed several key facilities, including the Grand Canyon Lodge. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported.
