City of Albuquerque Explores Plans to Update Broadway Blvd

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The City of Albuquerque is exploring the possibility of implementing a “road diet” on Broadway Boulevard, a key corridor near downtown, which could reduce the number of driving lanes to create safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Currently, Broadway Blvd. has two lanes in each direction, but the city is considering changes to better accommodate all types of road users.

Dan Mayfield, Public Information Officer for the City’s Municipal Development Department, explained that the goal is to enhance safety for everyone—drivers, walkers, and bicyclists alike. The proposed changes would affect the stretch of Broadway between Lomas Boulevard and Lead Avenue.

Plans, including the potential removal of one or more traffic lanes to add bike lanes, will be presented at an upcoming community meeting on August 14. “We’re weighing options like whether to reduce to a single lane or keep two lanes, aiming to find the best way to improve this part of Broadway,” Mayfield said.

Local business owners welcome the idea of improving walkability in the area. Anna Rogers, who owns Revelry Salon nearby, said, “I’ve been here 15 years, and the area hasn’t been very pedestrian-friendly. Many people avoid this spot because it doesn’t feel safe. Making it more inviting for foot traffic could really help bring more customers.”

The city also plans to introduce additional crosswalks, which could further support pedestrian safety and business growth.

While a road diet might slow traffic slightly, Mayfield pointed out that new street light technology could help maintain smooth vehicle flow despite the lane reductions.

Although funding has not yet been secured, Broadway Blvd. improvements remain a top priority for the city. If the project moves forward, construction could begin as soon as next year.

Residents are encouraged to attend the public meeting on August 14 at 5 p.m., located at 609 Broadway Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102, to learn more and provide feedback.
