ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Juan Portillo Mendez, previously charged with the murder of a former friend, is now facing additional criminal allegations involving sexual assault.
Authorities report that the Albuquerque Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit began investigating Mendez after a family member came forward with allegations. The victim reportedly stayed with Mendez for several days in 2024, during which the sexual assault occurred. According to APD, Mendez admitted to detectives that the assault took place.

Mendez has now been formally charged with criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact of a minor, and intimidation of a minor. Police continue to investigate the case.
