Crews Quickly Extinguish Fires Behind Northeast Albuquerque Strip Mall

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Oct. 7, 2025) — A late-night fire at the La Cueva Town Center prompted a swift response from Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) early Monday morning. Firefighters managed to contain the flames in minutes, preventing what could have been a much larger disaster at one of the city’s busiest retail centers. Investigators are now working to determine whether the blaze was deliberately set.

Flames Reported Just After Midnight

The first calls came in around 12:10 a.m., alerting emergency dispatchers to reports of smoke and visible flames behind the La Cueva Town Center, a popular commercial plaza located at the intersection of Wyoming Boulevard and Paseo Del Norte in northeast Albuquerque.

Within minutes, AFR units were on scene, navigating the rear access area of the strip mall where the fire was concentrated. Firefighters discovered several small but growing fires burning behind the building. Using rapid attack tactics, crews worked to stop the spread before the flames could reach the main structures of the shopping complex.

Firefighters Contain Blaze Within Minutes

According to Albuquerque Fire Rescue, crews successfully knocked down the flames within eight minutes of their arrival. Their quick action was credited with saving the entire strip mall from significant damage.

“The fire had the potential to spread into the main shopping area, but our crews acted quickly and efficiently,” an AFR spokesperson said. “Their efforts kept the damage localized and prevented a much larger loss.”

The fire was primarily contained to the loading dock area behind the Smith’s grocery store, one of the anchor businesses at La Cueva Town Center. While smoke and heat caused some minor damage to the exterior of the building, none of the neighboring stores sustained any structural impact.

Damage Contained to Smith’s Loading Area

The Smith’s grocery store was closed at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Fire officials confirmed that the flames did not extend into the store’s interior or impact its operations. Other nearby businesses—including restaurants, retail shops, and offices—remained unaffected.

Firefighters spent several additional hours at the scene conducting overhaul operations, ensuring that all hotspots were extinguished and that no smoldering debris remained behind the building.

Possible Arson Under Investigation

As daylight broke over Albuquerque, AFR’s Fire Investigation Division began combing through the scene to determine how the fires started. Preliminary reports suggest that multiple separate fires were found behind the strip mall, leading investigators to explore the possibility that the blaze may have been intentionally set.

“We’re investigating all potential causes, including the possibility of arson,” officials stated. “Our investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding businesses.”

Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising behind the complex just after midnight, and some residents in nearby neighborhoods said they could smell the fire from several blocks away.

Community on Alert

The La Cueva Town Center is a well-known shopping area in Albuquerque’s far northeast heights, frequented by residents from nearby neighborhoods such as North Albuquerque Acres and Tanoan. It includes a range of businesses—restaurants, grocery stores, service centers, and fitness studios—that serve hundreds of customers daily.

News of the fire spread quickly on social media, with many residents expressing relief that firefighters contained the flames before they could cause widespread destruction. Several users shared photos and videos of fire engines lined up along the back of the complex as crews worked under bright emergency lights.

“I live just down the street and could smell the smoke right after midnight,” said one local resident. “By the time I looked outside, I could already see the flashing lights. AFR was there fast.”

AFR Praised for Quick Response

Albuquerque Fire Rescue has received widespread praise for its rapid containment efforts. Crews were able to save the structure in under 10 minutes, a testament to their training and coordination.

AFR regularly responds to commercial fire alarms and structure fires across the city, but officials emphasized that quick reporting from witnesses made a significant difference in this case. “Every minute counts,” AFR said in a public statement. “Early notification and a fast response can mean the difference between minor damage and total loss.”

Looking Ahead

While investigators have not yet released an official cause, the scene remains under active investigation. AFR is expected to release additional details once evidence is analyzed and any potential surveillance footage is reviewed.

City officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area before or after midnight to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers.

In the meantime, businesses in the La Cueva Town Center are expected to reopen as usual. Smith’s grocery store confirmed that the damage was limited to the exterior loading area and that the store remains fully operational.

A Reminder of Fire Safety Awareness

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety awareness in commercial areas. AFR has encouraged local businesses to regularly check fire suppression systems, maintain clear access for emergency vehicles, and ensure security lighting and cameras are functional, particularly in loading and dumpster areas where fires often begin.

As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the La Cueva Town Center fire, the community’s relief is clear: a potentially devastating blaze was stopped in its tracks, thanks to the quick actions of Albuquerque Fire Rescue.
