Albuquerque Seeks Fusion Energy Company for Mesa del Sol Project

Albuquerque leaders are working to position the city as a future hub for clean energy innovation, with hopes of landing a major investment from Pacific Fusion, a company at the forefront of fusion power technology.

The New Mexico Economic Development Department confirmed in July that Pacific Fusion is weighing Albuquerque as the site of its new billion-dollar research and development headquarters. The proposed facility would focus on advancing fusion energy — the same process that powers the sun — as a long-term solution for sustainable power generation.

To strengthen Albuquerque’s case, city officials are pushing forward two ordinances designed to offer financial incentives. The measures would provide up to $9 million in reimbursements through Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funds and property tax breaks. These funds could help offset costs for land, infrastructure, and other start-up expenses tied to the project.

“They’re looking at a $1 billion investment,” said City Councilor Nicole Rogers of District 6. “What we’re offering is a partnership approach, showing we’re ready to support them as they bring this vision to life.”

If approved, the company’s facility would be built on 17 acres of open land in Mesa del Sol. Plans include a 200,000-square-foot headquarters, with recent zoning approvals clearing the way for construction. State officials emphasize that Albuquerque is uniquely positioned to host the project thanks to its proximity to Sandia National Laboratories, where much of the pioneering work in fusion began.

“Our scientific and construction workforce gives New Mexico an advantage that few other places can match,” said Rob Black, Cabinet Secretary of the Economic Development Department. “We believe the state can lead the world in fusion energy.”

Pacific Fusion is also considering sites in California, but Albuquerque officials are hopeful the incentives and local expertise will help tilt the decision in their favor.

Should the company select Albuquerque, the project is expected to generate more than 200 high-paying jobs and deliver an estimated $1.2 billion economic boost to New Mexico over the next decade.

A final decision from Pacific Fusion is anticipated in September, with construction potentially starting as early as 2026.
