ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The City of Albuquerque has renamed a key bicycle facility in tribute to Chuck Malagodi, a beloved cycling advocate and safety educator who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash earlier this year.
On what would have been his 65th birthday, city officials gathered Tuesday to unveil a commemorative plaque at the Esperanza Bicycle Safety Education Center, where Chuck spent years teaching bike safety and mentoring young riders throughout the metro area.
“His smile said it all — you could feel the hope in him. He truly believed he could make a difference, and he did,” said his daughter, Angelina Malagodi.
In addition to the plaque, a portion of the North Diversion Channel Trail — located just south of Balloon Fiesta Park — now bears Chuck’s name, honoring his enduring legacy within the city’s cycling community.
Chuck’s death in January shook the community. He was hit by a vehicle while cycling, and authorities are still searching for the suspect, identified as Jose Rios Sanchez. The vehicle involved is believed to be a white Dodge Ram.
