Good Samaritan Rescues Newborn After Hearing Cries from Dumpster

A gripping scene unfolded in Sun Valley, Nevada, on July 5 when a newborn baby was discovered crying inside a dumpster—prompting a swift, life-saving response from a local citizen. According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), the unnamed Good Samaritan heard faint cries coming from a parking lot dumpster and immediately called 911. Acting quickly, they climbed into the bin and safely pulled the newborn from the trash.

Authorities say the baby was taken to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition.

Just two days later, Washoe County investigators arrested 28-year-old Taylour Dickinson in connection with the incident. She now faces charges of attempted murder and child abuse, neglect, or endangerment. Detective Claire Hoops-Adams testified in court that Dickinson had delivered the baby alone in a nearby restroom. In what she described as a state of “panic and shock,” Dickinson allegedly placed the infant in a towel, then a trash bag, and left him in the dumpster without confirming whether he was alive.

The court has set Dickinson’s bail at $1 million, cash-only.

Sheriff Darin Balaam praised the citizen’s decisive action and reminded the public of Nevada’s Safe Haven Law. The law allows parents to legally and anonymously surrender babies up to 30 days old at designated locations such as hospitals, police stations, or fire departments—without facing prosecution.

“This baby is alive today because someone cared enough to act,” Balaam said, urging others to learn about the Safe Haven options available throughout the state.
