Honoring 9/11 First Responders at Climb the Cube

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — This fall, the New Mexico Museum of Space History will once again serve as the backdrop for a deeply moving tribute to the nation’s first responders. On Saturday, September 13, 2025, community members are invited to take part in Climb the Cube, an annual event dedicated to remembering the courage and sacrifice of those who answered the call on September 11, 2001.

A Symbolic Challenge

The event is designed to recreate, in symbolic form, the daunting climb made by firefighters, police officers, EMTs, K9 handlers, and other emergency personnel who entered the World Trade Center towers that morning. Participants will face the challenge of climbing the equivalent of 110 stories, mirroring the height of the towers and paying tribute to the bravery of those who gave everything in their mission to save lives.

“This climb isn’t about competition or speed,” organizers explain. “It’s about reflection. Every step acknowledges the resilience and determination of the first responders who rushed into danger when others were rushing out.”

Registration and Event Details

Check-in for the climb will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the museum. Because space is limited, early registration is strongly recommended. Organizers urge participants to sign up in advance to secure their place and avoid missing out on this moving experience.

Participants of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to join. The emphasis is not on finishing first, but on completing the climb as a collective act of remembrance and unity.

Commemorative Keepsakes and Raffle

To mark the occasion, participants will have the opportunity to purchase a limited-edition event t-shirt for $20. Wearing the shirt during the climb has become a popular way for attendees to visually show their solidarity and commitment to honoring the memory of the fallen.

In addition, every climber will be entered into a special raffle for a unique prize: a firefighter helmet valued at approximately $600. The helmet, generously donated by Milton Blankenship of Casco Industries, will not simply become a collector’s item—it will be donated for active use by a Chief or Deputy Chief firefighter, ensuring that the gift continues to serve the community in a meaningful way.

A Community’s Commitment to Remembrance

Over two decades have passed since the tragic events of September 11, yet the impact remains strong in communities across the nation, including here in Alamogordo. The Climb the Cube event provides a meaningful outlet for collective remembrance.

“Each step in this climb carries weight,” said April James of the New Mexico Museum of Space History. “It’s not just about exercise—it’s about honoring resilience, courage, and sacrifice. This event reminds us that the spirit of those heroes continues to inspire future generations.”

More Than Just a Climb

The event is more than a physical challenge—it’s a living memorial. For some participants, it will be a chance to honor loved ones lost on that day. For others, it’s an opportunity to stand with firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and all emergency responders who continue to serve today.

Local leaders and firefighters stress that the event also highlights the importance of remembering the ongoing contributions of first responders. While the climb recalls the bravery of 2001, it also shines a light on the everyday sacrifices made by men and women in uniform who continue to protect and serve.

Why It Matters

The climb is a reminder that history lives on not only in books and documentaries but in community gatherings that allow individuals to connect with the past in an active and personal way. By taking on the climb, participants are quite literally walking in the footsteps of heroes, reflecting on the courage it took to face unimaginable circumstances.

For Alamogordo, hosting the event at the New Mexico Museum of Space History also underscores the connection between innovation, exploration, and sacrifice. Just as astronauts have braved the unknown for the sake of discovery, first responders braved mortal danger for the sake of saving others. Both represent the best of human courage and commitment.

A Day of Reflection

As the anniversary of 9/11 approaches, events like Climb the Cube ensure that the memories of those who gave their lives remain vibrant and honored. This year’s climb is expected to draw community members from across the region, each bringing their own story, their own memories, and their own reasons for participating.

“Ultimately,” organizers said, “this climb is about unity. It’s about showing that we have not forgotten, that we continue to be inspired by the heroes of 9/11, and that their spirit endures in the steps we take together.”
