Hurley Police Department Receives Donated Patrol Vehicle

HURLEY, N.M. — In a special session on Tuesday, the Hurley Town Council voted to accept a donated police vehicle from the City of Alamogordo, a move that comes at no cost to the town.

Police Chief Kevin Vigil explained that he contacted the New Mexico Association of Chiefs of Police for assistance in locating a replacement patrol car. The organization sent out a statewide message, prompting a direct response from Alamogordo officials.

“They reached out personally and offered a vehicle they were preparing to donate,” Vigil told the council. The vehicle in question is a 2015 Ford Explorer with approximately 97,000 miles on it. It will arrive fully outfitted for police use, although maintenance records were not included.

“We’re taking a risk, but there’s no financial cost to us,” said Mayor Ed Stevens in support of the decision.

During the same meeting, the council approved a modification to the E, Anza, and Third Street construction project. The update includes a reduction of roughly $3,000 in fees charged by engineering firm Stantec, as well as the addition of quality assurance testing.

Shanti Ceane, senior manager at Stantec, said that changes to project scope led to a shorter timeline and the revised fee. “We reduced the length of the project due to funding limitations, and added quality testing once the specific bid areas requiring it were identified,” she explained.

In addition to infrastructure matters, the council passed several budget-related resolutions. These included fourth-quarter adjustments and reporting for fiscal year 2024–25, and adoption of the fiscal year 2025–26 budget.

The meeting concluded with the council adopting the Grant County 2025 Hazard Mitigation Action Plan. Mayor Stevens emphasized the importance of the 400-page plan, which outlines emergency protocols at the federal, state, and local levels.

“This plan activates in the event of a disaster affecting our area and opens the door to potential mitigation funding,” he said.

The council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for August 12 at 5 p.m. at the Hurley Community Center.
