Man in Albuquerque Gets Prison Time for Possessing Gun Illegally

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man from Albuquerque has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison after being caught with a firearm during a vehicle break-in in Santa Fe County.

The incident took place in June 2020 when deputies responded to reports of a break-in involving a parked vehicle. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Michael Matthew Martinez asleep in the backseat of the car. When officers instructed him to exit the vehicle, they reported seeing him reach toward his jacket pocket. Concerned for their safety, deputies quickly restrained him and later discovered a firearm hidden in a small packet.

Further investigation revealed Martinez was a convicted felon at the time of the incident, making it illegal for him to possess a gun.

Martinez later admitted guilt to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A federal judge sentenced him to 51 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release once his prison term is complete.
