ALAMOGORDO – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) and the New Mexico Museum of Space History Commission have announced the appointment of Karen Kincaid Brady as executive director of the museum, effective October 27, 2025. This leadership transition marks a new chapter for the Alamogordo institution, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the state’s rich contributions to space exploration.
“We are thrilled to welcome Karen to the New Mexico Museum of Space History,” said NMDCA Cabinet Secretary Debra Garcia y Griego. “Her combined expertise in history, preservation, and museum leadership, paired with her lifelong passion for space history, will help inspire future generations through the remarkable story of New Mexico’s role in space exploration.”
Kincaid Brady brings to the museum more than a decade of experience in museum management, historic preservation, and public programming. She most recently served as business and programming director at the Neill-Cochran House Museum in Austin, Texas, where she managed daily operations, oversaw staff and volunteers, developed fundraising strategies, and cultivated community partnerships.
Prior to her work at Neill-Cochran, Kincaid Brady was project manager and historic preservation lead at R&K Solutions, Inc., where she directed multiple preservation projects that culminated in museum exhibitions, including a notable installation at the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, Florida. Her career has been marked by a dedication to combining historical research with engaging public experiences, ensuring that museums serve as vibrant centers for learning and cultural appreciation.
“My love for space history began during childhood visits to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum,” Kincaid Brady said. “Joining the New Mexico Museum of Space History feels like coming full circle. I’m excited to continue advancing the museum’s mission to share the stories of innovation, exploration, and discovery that define both New Mexico and our journey into space.”

In her new role, Kincaid Brady will oversee all aspects of museum operations, including exhibitions, research initiatives, and educational programming. She will lead efforts to maintain the museum’s reputation as a premier cultural institution in New Mexico, while also fostering initiatives that connect local communities, students, and visitors from across the country to the state’s pivotal contributions to space exploration.
Located in Alamogordo, the New Mexico Museum of Space History is a division of the NMDCA. The museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting New Mexico’s significant role in the development of the U.S. space program. Its collections and exhibits highlight everything from early rocketry experiments to contemporary achievements in space research. Notable features include the International Space Hall of Fame, which honors pioneers and innovators in space exploration, and the New Horizons Dome Theater, which offers immersive educational experiences for audiences of all ages.
Kincaid Brady’s academic credentials align closely with the museum’s mission. She holds master’s degrees in historic preservation from the University of Texas at Austin and in history from the University of Texas at San Antonio, in addition to a graduate certificate in historic preservation from UT San Antonio. Her scholarly work includes Preservation Moon: Defining and Preserving the Cultural Landscape of Tranquility Base, a study that examines the historical and cultural significance of the Apollo 11 lunar landing site. This research underscores her deep interest in the heritage of space exploration and its broader cultural impact.
Throughout her career, Kincaid Brady has emphasized the importance of community engagement and educational outreach. At the Neill-Cochran House Museum, she implemented programs that increased public access to historical collections and created opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. Her expertise in strategic planning, program development, and fundraising will be essential in guiding the New Mexico Museum of Space History as it continues to expand its reach and impact.
The appointment of Kincaid Brady comes at a time when the museum is focused on strengthening its educational offerings and broadening public engagement.
