Train enthusiasts and families alike will have a rare opportunity to see a fully restored steam locomotive in action during New Mexico Railroad Days, taking place September 27 and 28 at the Albuquerque South Rail Yards.
The star attraction of the event will be Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 4-8-4 No. 2926, a massive steam engine originally built in 1944 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Though it was retired from active service after just nine years, the locomotive has made a remarkable comeback thanks to a nearly 20-year restoration effort by New Mexico Heritage Rail, also known as the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society.
Returned to operational status in 2021, No. 2926 is now recognized as the largest functioning 4-8-4 steam locomotive in North America. While the event won’t feature any moving demonstrations, the engine will be fully fired up, allowing visitors to step into the cab and even blow the whistle — a treat for train lovers of all ages.

A highlight of the weekend will be a night photography session, offering a chance to capture the iconic locomotive in dramatic lighting. While general admission is free and open to all, tickets for the night session are available in advance at 2926.us.
Event hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 27, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 28. With a mix of history, hands-on experiences, and visual spectacle, New Mexico Railroad Days promises to be a memorable celebration of rail heritage.
