A tragic incident unfolded late Friday night in Albuquerque when a dispute over a parking space escalated into gunfire, leaving one man dead and another facing serious charges.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), officers were dispatched to the Effingbar and Grill, located near Sequoia Road and Atrisco Drive just west of Coors Boulevard, around 10:40 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they discovered a man suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot. The victim, later identified as 22-year-old Carlos Ochoa, was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to save him.
Arrest Made in Connection with Shooting
The following night, APD announced that they had arrested 38-year-old David Casarez in connection with Ochoa’s death. Casarez is accused of firing the shots that killed Ochoa during a heated altercation. Police confirmed that the dispute began when Ochoa allegedly pulled into a parking space that Casarez had been waiting to use.
What began as a disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation between the two men. Witnesses told investigators that women from both vehicles also became involved, engaging in a fight alongside the men. Tensions boiled over, and at some point, Casarez reportedly went back to his vehicle to retrieve a firearm.
Conflicting Accounts of What Happened
Casarez told police he acted in self-defense, claiming that Ochoa pulled a gun on him during the fight. However, detectives have stated they were unable to confirm whether Ochoa was armed. No weapon belonging to Ochoa was recovered at the scene.

Several witnesses contradicted Casarez’s account, telling officers that he was the aggressor. They said Casarez started the fight after Ochoa pulled into the contested parking space. Witnesses also reported seeing Casarez strike Ochoa’s girlfriend with the handgun before turning it on Ochoa.
According to their accounts, Casarez fired multiple shots, causing Ochoa to collapse to the ground. But the violence did not stop there. Witnesses say that as Ochoa attempted to sit up after being struck, Casarez shot him one final time, delivering the fatal blow.
Community Shock and Police Investigation
The incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing disbelief that something as minor as a parking dispute could escalate to such deadly violence. Police say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to review surveillance footage from the bar and interview witnesses who were present during the altercation.
“This tragedy highlights how quickly tempers can flare and how devastating the consequences can be when a firearm is introduced into a conflict,” an APD spokesperson said. “We are working diligently to ensure justice is served in this case.”
Charges Filed Against Casarez
Casarez now faces a series of serious charges. Police confirmed he has been charged with an open count of murder, meaning the court will determine the degree of the charge depending on evidence presented. In addition, he faces two counts of aggravated battery, reportedly related to the alleged assault of Ochoa’s girlfriend, and three counts of aggravated assault connected to the confrontation.
Authorities said Casarez was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). He is expected to make his first court appearance in the coming days, where a judge will decide whether he will remain in custody as the case proceeds.
Broader Concerns Over Gun Violence
This case adds to ongoing concerns in Albuquerque about gun violence and disputes turning deadly. In recent years, city officials have repeatedly pointed to the rising number of violent crimes tied to arguments and confrontations that escalate.
Community members have also raised concerns about the availability of firearms and how easily everyday conflicts can turn into tragedies. “We’re losing too many young lives to senseless violence,” one local resident said after learning of the incident. “A parking space should never cost someone their life.”
Remembering the Victim
Carlos Ochoa’s family and friends are now left mourning the loss of a young man whose life was cut short in an instant. At only 22 years old, Ochoa’s death has left a void for those who knew him. Loved ones have described him as full of energy and deeply connected to his family.

As the legal case against Casarez moves forward, APD has emphasized that their priority is ensuring accountability. Investigators continue to urge anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
Moving Forward
For now, the community is grappling with the reality of a tragedy that unfolded over something as seemingly insignificant as a parking space. Police have underscored the importance of conflict de-escalation and the dangers of letting emotions dictate actions in heated situations.
Casarez remains in custody as the judicial process moves forward. Meanwhile, the memory of Carlos Ochoa serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of violence, leaving many in Albuquerque calling for change and greater efforts to address the city’s struggles with escalating disputes that end in bloodshed.
